Poems in A - II
I imagine us having a conversation
and I tell you about my first experience
as a bully:
that the reason I do the things I
do is because
this is what I
have come to understand people
do in social environments.
There are other
things I’d like to do in public, I tell you,
but don’t because they are not socially
acceptable.
And I tell you how in seventh
grade in my school in Santurce, a
classmate sitting in front of me had just
recently shaved his head. I
slapped him. I tell you I’d
like to go around the bar knocking
everyone on the back of their heads
and that I wish I were
the bar’s sink, because I’d get
really drunk almost every night for free.
But I lied to you. In our
imaginary conversation, I lied to you.
I’m sorry. I did not slap the
back of my classmate’s head because
I had the sudden impulse.
I slapped
the back of his head because sometime
before, when I had recently shaved my
head, some other bully had
slapped mine.
